Pink and red as a color combo is severely underappreciated. Negative points for forgetting Joel’s facial hair until way after it was published. Also the lines are too thick for what I prefer. Hence bottom slot. :/
9. January 20
As you’ll see, I tend to favor Rickies with a lot of blank space. This one would be higher if I’d drawn B*n S*mmons’s foot correctly. And if they didn’t look weirdly small. I do love the way Joel is squatting.
8. September 15
This one was simple but effective and a subtle nod, at least aesthetically, to CrazySexyCool, which my sister had in her 2000s-era CD tower and which I stared at a lot when I would sleep on her floor instead of my own bed because it was like a sleepover without the first major requirement of a sleepover, which was having friends. I’m so tired of drawing B*n S*mmons.
7. August 25
This one is so dramatic! Wah. Isn’t it cool. At this point I can’t remember if I had a specific reference point but, to me, it feels like a shot in some Criterion-tier movie. Janus Films eat your heart out.
6. July 4
Absolute classic. Nothing else to say.
5. October 6
Even though I’m tired of drawing B*n S*mmons, I love love love this one. There’s a looseness to it.
If you’re curious, B*n S*mmons has been, for me, the most difficult Sixer to draw. He has a bit of a Mona Lisa quality to him. An unknowability. And that sucks for me specifically.

Absolute all-timer. It’s so cute. It’s so funky. It’s so vintage. It’s so silly. It’s so perfect. This is the ideal Ricky image for me. The platonic ideal of a Ricky drawing. Bright but muted. Interesting but not complex. 10/10, five out of five bags of popcorn.
3. November 9
More blank space. I couldn’t leave Franklin the Dog out of this list, and this one was the best of the best this year. Look at his widdle paws.
I don’t love the leaf.
2. April 21
This one was a crowd-pleaser! I love it. There are some awkward choices but my brain was huge for this one. They are so cute and so small. Look at his widdle tail.

An absolute dark horse! I had most of my list picked out and then I drew this one for the 12/21 episode of the Ricky. Spike had no ideas, and I usually get the ideas for these things from him, because I don’t follow basketball, so he told me to draw Leo, my partner. And I said alright, careful what you wish for. [editor’s note - I told Abbie to “draw Leo listening to the Ricky.” Love Leo.]
Leo does not like this one.
