MAILBAG VOLUME 4: THE NERVE!
I was wondering if you could provide me with some music recommendations (rock/alt rock) so I can fill this emptiness with Flyers games, Phillies predictions and spring training lineups, and music you’ve recommended. Though I’m kinda out on this season, I’ll never be out on the Ricky, so thanks for keeping me in it.
-Tom
Not all of these are new, but I feel like I never discover music on the same timeline as everyone else, so I apologize if any of this is old news. Honestly, at this point in my life, I don’t think I discover anything that isn’t old news.
Let’s go all female vocals in honor of Mike.
Boy Genius - Me And My Dog - Amos Lee occasionally sends me songs that mention dogs, and this one is one of my favorites. The entire EP is great.
Swerves - Drunk Texts - This very much hits me in my 90s bones. It seems like the singer is also a Sixers fan, which is sad for her but at least we can imagine we’ve shared some experiences.
Sharon Van Etten - Seventeen - This is like the best Killers song that the Killers never wrote.
Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz - Right after Bangerz, Miley went rogue on her record label, recorded an album with the Flaming Lips, and toured on it. She lived in Philly for a little while in 2012/2013 and apparently fell in love with 90s alternative music and it helped create this. It’s a cool album that gets better with multiple listens.
Lights - Long Live (f/ Travis Barker) - This song isn’t new, but I don’t think it was ever popular so I will continue to recommend it.
Clearly I am less and less appreciative of Al Horford. Is trading Al Horford for some semblance of guard play and shooting the ultimate good move for great move? Should we ban the shirt until the front office trades Al Horford?
-Greg
We have to be resolute in our belief that we were always right about everything. There will be no banning of the shirt. I might wear the shirt… more?
The shirt was never about Horford, it was about all of us, driving Celtics fans crazy, and finding new ways to make t-shirts that confuse just about everyone you cross paths with.
Horford Appreciator shirts live forever.
With the Sixers being in the 6th spot in the Eastern conference, they would play Boston in the first round. Assuming Ben and Joel are healthy for the first round, would it be better if the Sixers moved to the 7th spot to play Toronto in round 1 instead? Personally I think the Raptors are a fake good team and without Kawhi they are worse than last year going off talent alone. Thoughts on tanking for the 7th spot?
-David
I love the nerve of all of us. Here we are, furious with how inconsistent the current Sixers are, how poorly they were built, and how unable they are to withstand the loss of even one starter while staying competitive. And at the same time, we’re thinking maybe we should lose a few more games on purpose to play a 60 win team that also won the NBA Championship last year. I do love it.
Honestly, I think there is very little difference in the odds of the Sixers winning a series against any of the other top six teams in the Eastern Conference. I’d have them at slightly less than a 50/50 chance against the Raptors or Celtics (maybe 42% and 46% respectively), just above a 50/50 chance of beating the Heat (let’s say 56%), the best chance of beating the Pacers (62%), and the worst chance of beating the Bucks, but still a pretty good chance (31%).
So long story short, I think they’re better off just trying to play well and letting the chips stack where they may. We’re all going to die if they lose to Miami in the first round anyway, so what’s the difference?
