MIKE'S CORNER CORNER... MIKE IS OUT OF THE OFFICE
New to the Corner Three Newsletter: every week Spike or Mike will write a section, aptly titled Spike's Corner or Mike's Corner. It's Spike's turn today and it's about the NCAA Tournament.
I am out of the office. To be clear, I do not have an office. Young Rock season 3 ended a little bit ago, so I'm working on new stuff from home, but if I had an office, I would absolutely be out of it. I would be taking Paid Time Off, Unpaid Time Off, Sick Leave... I would consider having very successful sex in late June so that I could take Paternity Leave right around this time.
Because we have arrived at the four best days of the year. What's better than basketball? Four basketball games at once, for twelve hours, for four straight days. Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back.
For the last few years of Sixers assets getting traded away, I've been nostalgic for the days when everybody was a Future Sixer. I'd watch the 2016 NCAA Tournament and come away with a 45-man roster of Future Sixers. #OneSixEleven contained multitudes. But as the team traded away picks to improve a bench spot here, get off an Al Horford there, rob me of a David Roddy everywhere... I came to the conclusion that my imagination can only do so much with just the 56th pick.
But I'm realizing now that I was thinking about it completely wrong.
Whereas before it was the blue chip prospects we'd sweat over, worried if they're skilled enough to ever be The Guy, now we don't have to worry about that. We have The Guy. We have a few The Guys. Now we just need 1-2 rookie deal guys each year to fill out the roster that is lopsidedly paying out the expensive dudes. The Sixers have 10 players under any contract for next year, and like $3.50 to give to the other five. Some of those will be filled by re-signings (Niang? McDaniels? Bball??), and a veteran's minimum or two. But Daryl you are gonna have to come to my neck of the woods for a 14th/15th guy or at LEAST a 2-way or two.
Which means we get to leave the office to watch an unhealthy amount of basketball, and pore over not just the lottery picks, but the late second rounder. The undrafted free agent that gets announced before the draft even technically ends. The TJ McConnell training camp invite that makes the team. And with limited ways to improve the team once they hopefully give Harden another few years, somebody the Sixers get late could turn into a rotation piece down the line.
Honestly, trade all the picks. I don't need 'em, they just restrict me. I'm becoming a draft nudist. So get your Mark Sears ready. Clear your schedule for Andre Jackson, Jr. Dream big about what Bryce Hopkins's body could become in an NBA conditioning program. Coleman Hawkins come on down. Seth Lundy?! ART KALUMA?!?! The Sixers have the best player in the league, one of the best guards of all time, and the nicest young player in league history who has never missed a three. It is now our job, collectively, to surround them with 12 undrafted free agents with a mouth full of blood and a workable jumper. AutoReply: I am extremely out of the office.

Congrats to Rockets President Daryl Morey in the Bubble at Disney World, as his appearance on the Rights To Ricky Sanchez in July of 2020 has won the listener vote and will be inducted into the Process Hall of Fame. Daryl's appearance just edged out Tony T's performance of Me and Kyrie. We don't yet have a statement from Tony.
