The Opening Tip
Hello & Happy Almost Weekend - It's the Corner Three!
We've got ten days to raise $6,300 for Providence Animal Center. That's our Bark In The Park deadline.
This is incredibly important to me to support the animals who need homes and love, and the people who work tirelessly to do it. Whatever you can spare, I'd appreciate.
Also if someone donates $2,000 and lives in PA/NJ/DE, I will drive to your house one weekend day and cook you and up to five other people breakfast. Eggs and shit. Whatever. Seriously.
Love, Spike
Oh Yeah, The Sixers
2 Preseason Games In - Quick Reaction Time
-These guys are going to RUN. They are going to be pretty menacing on defense, 48 minutes of hell anyone?
-Jaden Springer is absolutely making a case to crack the rotation and stay there. His energy, toughness and straight up ability to get going down hill will serve him will on a Nick Nurse team.
-BBall Paul is still getting used to not getting yelled at and benched for trying to be a better basketball player and that's just fine!
-Mad Max is so ready for this second star role, talk soon.
-Pat Bev, Tsunami Papi and those guys will be fun. I said fun, never said good, so don't come after me.
-There was a James Harden shootaround sighting then he went to the back presumably to go through the seating chart for his LAX flight.
-I really understand how no one has a clue what the fuck this team will be this year. They are prime to be a top 3 seed or have the bottom fall out by March, it's astounding.
-Danny Green is..back? He even runs differently. I think he unironically earned that last roster spot, helping solidify this as the weirdest old young team in the NBA.
-Nick Nurse will be awesome for alot of these players but mostly Joel Embiid. I think he has Embiid's ear and attention and they both share a common goal this year of wanting to prove alot of people wrong in a big way.
Mike's Corner... He Forgot Again So Spike Is Writing About Bryce Harper
Every week Spike or Mike will give you something that's on their mind. It's Mike's week but he didn't write anything.
Hey it's Spike! Mike forgot to write something again. So I've got to get the newsletter out, so it's me. I'm sorry.
I just wanted to send a note about Bryce Harper. I was pretty fucking wrong about that guy. When I worked at WIP, I kept most of my Eagles and Phillies takes to myself. We are partners with the team at WIP, and my role was not to give opinions, it was to build better relationships with the team, so I just shut the fuck up mostly (I thought Carson Wentz was a loser the whole time. It was painful.)
Anyway, what I said a lot is that I thought Bryce Harper wasn't a winning player. The pandering drove me insane, and it always seemed like whether he was in the lineup or not, the team looked exactly the same. Boy was I wrong. That guy is the real deal.
To be clear, he's definitely pandering. I know he says he's not, but he is. That said, he seems to be pandering for all of the right reasons. He's pandering like someone who is trying to hard to be in your friend group, but he genuinely wants to be in your friend group.
As for performance, there is just no way to argue it. Regular season, postseason, the guy just brings it at all times. If I was cheering for a team playing the Phillies in the playoffs, I'd be absolutely terrified of Bryce Harper.
It's interesting to watch a guy grow up in front of our faces. Since Harper came into MLB so young, it's hard to believe he's only 30 years old. I'm a guy, and I was a total idiot in my teens, and all the way through my 20s (many would argue I still am, but I think I'm a way better person). As Harper grows up, he's become a leader, on top of being a great player.
Philly is lucky to have him, and I am thrilled to be wrong about him.
Peace, Love and Process Still Swinging
