Spike's Corner... You Must Not Be A Coward
Every week, Spike or Mike is going to write a column for the #CornerThree. It's Spike's week, and it's about allowing yourself to believe.
To truly know love, you must allow yourself to be hurt.
To truly enjoy what this Sixers season could bring, you must believe. It is the year. They will not let you down.
Will they win the title? I don't know. Probably not. But I do know, in my heart, they will not let me down like they did before. They will run through the finish line. They will do us proud. They have learned, like we have learned. They are different, and they deserve our faith and belief.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are, statistically, the best defensive team in the NBA. Yes, KAT is a coward, and yes, Rudy Gobert is a cement-footed fraud, but stats are stats. The Timberwolves also have the best record in the NBA. Joel Embiid went into the game, got every single player in foul trouble, and had 51 points in the win. With Embiid, they have beaten the Thunder, they have beaten the Celtics. They have the best offense in the NBA. They are different. We must trust them.
Joel Embiid is the MVP again. I will not accept that it doesn't matter, and I will not accept that I shouldn't want him to get it. Giannis won his MVP, failed in the playoffs, and won another one. Jokic won his MVP, failed in the playoffs, and won another one. Joel Embiid is better than either of those guys were when they won their second MVP. He is the Sixers best player on offense and defense while Giannis isn't even the best player on his own team on either side. Right is right, and Embiid should win MVP. He deserves our faith.
Also I'm sick of hearing that the MVP doesn't matter, only the playoffs matter. The MVP matters. The Sixers have had one repeat MVP in the history of the franchise, it was Wilt in the 60s, and there were ten teams in the entire league. Iverson didn't win back to back MVPs, neither did Dr. J, neither did Charles. Most of the time we spend watching the Sixers every year is in the regular season, and being the regular season MVP is a big deal.
Tyrese Maxey has taken the leap. He is a star. He's a top 20 player in the NBA and he's earned the right for us not to cap his ceiling, as every time we (or more accurately, I) do, he tops it. He scores 30 points almost regularly, and he averages fewer turnovers per game than we do podcasts in a week. He deserves our trust.
Nick Nurse isn't a fucking asshole and cares about basketball more than golf (though it's debatable that he might like music more than both). Covington is back. Melton can't make a layup but I still believe. Nico Batum is The French Connector. Patrick Beverley is already a local legend and somehow I'd trust him with my life. Tobias Harris is making $40 million dollars (we can't have everything).
This is the year. Say it. Type it. Believe it. This is the year. This is the year. THIS IS THE YEAR. THIS IS THE YEAR. THIS IS THE FUCKING YEAR I TELL YOU!!!!
I simply will not going into another round of Sixers playoffs waiting around for them to fail. I have done it for several years now, and even though I've been right, there is no joy. I am ready for the trust fall of Sixers basketball. I am closing my eyes, falling backwards into the Process abyss. We've been here for a decade waiting for this moment, and we cannot let it pass.
Peace, Love and Merry
Enjoy what there is to enjoy. Peace Yall
